The sequence signal → story → urge → usual action → cost is a way to look at a moment in smaller pieces. It is not a rule that everyone experiences five neat steps, and any part can be missing or unknown.

A signal is something you notice in your body, attention, pace, or energy. A story is the meaning you attach to the situation. An urge is what you feel pulled to do or avoid. The usual action is what you commonly do next. Cost is what that action takes, such as time, energy, effort, or an interrupted responsibility.

Imagine someone facing an unclear instruction. They notice themselves rereading faster: a signal. “I should already understand this” is the story. They feel pulled to rush: the urge. They submit without checking: the action. Correcting it later takes extra time: the cost. This is a fictional example, not a diagnosis or an explanation of every rushed task.

Noticing a signal does not establish its cause. You can also map a moment when things worked well and see what supported it. The purpose is to keep a choice available, not to make you calm.

No breathing exercise, touch, movement, closed eyes, spiritual language, or manufactured distress is required. This is educational navigation, not treatment or crisis care.

Journal minimum: Save at least one short note in a Try or Reflect box for this lesson. You do not have to answer every question. Write what you noticed, a question, or what you still do not know. If you have not tried the activity, say so. You can use the example instead of personal details. This leaves something to return to in later lessons. Saving is not sharing.
